"The Name of the Doctor" Christmas special

The currently untitled *50th anniversary special* of the British science
fiction television series /Doctor Who/ is a future episode to celebrate the
50th anniversary of the show. It is to be written by Steven Moffat,^[10]
who also serves as executive producer with Faith Penhale.^[7] It has been
described by series producer Marcus Wilson as a "love letter to the fans"
and by the Controller of BBC One Danny Cohen as an "event drama".^[10]^[11]
It is due to be shown on BBC One on 23 November 2013 in 2D and viewers will
also be able to watch in 3D. The special will also be shown in 3D at
cinemas across the United Kingdom at the same time.^[12]

David Tennant and Billie Piper, who previously starred in /Doctor Who/ as
the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler respectively, have been lined up to appear
in the special.^[6]John Hurt will also star as a "dark Doctor" who exists
between the Doctor's eighth and ninth
