** Molly: Pure, but Not So Simple **

Corbis

‘Molly is the big thing now. Coke is sort of grimy and passé. Weed
smells too much and is also sort of low rent and junior high.’

By IRINA ALEKSANDER

Published: June 21, 2013

At a party not long ago in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Kaitlin, a 22-year-old
senior at Columbia University, was recalling the first time she was offered
a drug called Molly, at the elegant Brooklyn home of a cultural figure she
admired. “She was, like, 50, and she had been written about in the Talk
of the Town,” said Kaitlin, who was wearing black skinny jeans and a tank
top. “This woman was very smart and impressive.”

*MDMA* (*3,4-methylenedioxy-/N/-methylamphetamine*) is an empathogenic drug
of the phenethylamine and amphetamine classes of drugs. MDMA has become
widely known as "*ecstasy*" (shortened to "*E*", "*X*", or "*XTC*"),
usually referring to its street pill form, although this term may also
include the presence of possible adulterants. The term "*molly*" or
"*mandy*" colloquially refers to MDMA in powder or crystalline form,
usually implying a higher level of purity.^[3]

MDMA can induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, and diminished
anxiety. Many studies, particularly in the fields of psychology and
cognitive therapy, have suggested MDMA has therapeutic benefits and
facilitates therapy sessions in certain individuals, a practice for which
it had been formally used in the past. Clinical trials are now testing the
therapeutic potential of MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety
associated with terminal cancer^[4]^[5] and addiction.^[6]

MDMA is criminalized in most countries (though some civil society
initiatives—such as the Global Commission on Drug Policy—consider
educating the public about the drug more important than curtailing
supply^[7])
