Business Casual

Business Casual (Photo credit: oxcnpxo)

I’ve worked at two companies recently that have an established dress
code of business casual.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? No more concerns about what to wear to work.
But what exactly /is/ business casual? I posted the question on Facebook
Facebook and got quite a few answers ranging from “Not jeans, but not
a suit” to “Nice blouse, pants, light jewellery. No suits, no
t-shirts, certainly no jeans – even black ones, no logo wear.”

Others said, “In my previous jobs, everything had to be tucked in, no
athletic clothes. Oh and if a boss said “you look casual,” that
was a hint to not wear the clothes again.”

There seemed to be agreement on: “For men: trousers/khakis and a shirt
with a collar. For women: trousers/knee-length skirt and a blouse or shirt
with a collar. No jeans. No athletic wear.”

But then this got a response of, “I disagree, no khakis.”

Wait, no khakis? Khakis aren’t jeans and they’re practically
iconic when paired with a blue dress shirt! Granted that look

Business casual is a term used to describe a type of office dress code or
clothing style that is a little more casual than traditional business wear.
Many employers adopt this dress code in an effort to allow employees to
feel more comfortable on the job and to have more freedom of expression
through their choice of attire. Although business casual is casual, it also
doesn't mean that anything goes.

-Business Casual for Men-

1. 1
*Choose shirts that have collars, such as long-sleeve button down shirts*.
Always tuck the shirt in and pair the shirt with an appropriate belt. For
business casual, no tie is necessary.

· Polo shirts are acceptable and so are golf shirts.
· White button-down shirts are the most formal and therefore the safest.
Unlike pants, all manner of shirt colors are acceptable: Purple, pink,
yellow, blue, and red.
· Choose shirts (and pants) in "formal" fabric: Cotton is king, and comes
in many different flavors. Wool is acceptable, if itchy. Silk, rayon, and
linen are frowned upon.
· Choose shirts in "formal patterns: Oxford, plaid, and poplin are a
little less formal, but perfectly acceptable. Twill, herringbone, and
broadcloth patterns are more formal and nice to use if sprucing up.^[1]
Hawaiian and other irregular patterns are considered too casual.
